Netherlands is the largest producer of potato seed in the world with most of the potato varieties grown in Kenya being Dutch. Snail meat is tantalising and super nutritious. Before you say “yuck”, read on. Not only is the meat amazingly sweet (it tastes like fried gizzard dipped in butter) it has a high demand from the high-end market that is so huge; farmers who have ventured into it cannot satisfy that market.
Two years ago, Mr Paul Wafula, who had just then completed his KCSE, bought two turkey hens to add to his mother’s poultry brood. The then 18-year-old from Naitiri Village in Bungoma did not imagine his decision would turn out so well that it would take care of his tuition fees at Maseno University.

The global food security paradox is a very sad one. On the one hand there is more than enough food to feed the world’s 7 billion inhabitants. There are surpluses in – mountains of grain; pyramids of meat; and rivers of milk in some world regions. On the other hand, too many beg and hope for their next meal. The other sad paradox is that my continent, Africa, which holds 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, is home to the largest population of chronically hungry, malnourished and, in some years, starving people. And we are a net importer of food.
In our current Strategic Plan, EarthWealth envisages to implement its programmes under three broad thematic areas or pillars.
To contribute to improved transparency and accountability of public funds and projects through effective and efficient social audit processes.
To contribute to farmers increased access to information on pricing of agricultural products (inputs and outputs), and connections to and knowledge of suppliers, buyers or logistics providers, such as storage facilities and transport companies.
EarthWealth provides investment in an agro-business partner enterprise that has good knowledge of the value chain in which it operates. The partner enterprise is capacitated with knowledge, skills, systems, technologies etc., through the investment. The partner enterprise (often together with service providers) assists suppliers of inputs (for example smallholders through contract farming) to improve quality (standards) and quantity of inputs and (sometimes) also support the distribution chain to make it more effective.
